Stand Tall

Stand Tall, a 10 ft stainless steel ring sculpture at Atlantic General Hospital's Regional Cancer Care Center in Berlin, MD, by Jason Smith
Stand Tall from behind, 10 ft stainless steel sculpture anchored to a concrete slab, by Jason Smith

Stand Tall was commissioned for the John H. "Jack" Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Care Center at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Maryland, near Ocean City. It represents exactly what the title says, the ability to stand tall while going through life changing events. We have all been touched by cancer in one way or another, whether it's a loved one, a relative or a friend. This piece is for all my heroes out there who stand tall and walk through life with love, strength and courage, regardless of the outcome.

It rises 10 feet. A brushed stainless steel ring holds three polished stainless steel rods, all set on a weathering Corten steel base. I worked on this project for over a year and installed it in June 2018, just before the center opened. The base is anchored to a concrete slab, so it stays put through wind and weather. Inside, its companion piece, Love, Strength, Hope, sits in the middle of the reception area, the first thing you see when you walk in. It symbolizes overcoming adversity, for patients and caregivers alike.

Commissioning a piece like this

Stand Tall stands 10 ft at the entrance of a regional cancer care center, a place where people need strength. If you're planning a focal point for a garden, landscape, campus, business or public space, I'd love to help. I work with you or your designer by phone or email, and I make a rendering of the piece on your own site before I build. I can work in stainless steel like Stand Tall, steel or weathering Corten steel. Most commissions take about 90 days. I crate and ship anywhere in the US, and I install on site personally. Every piece is custom made, so tell me about your space and I'll send a quote.
