Public Art and Commercial Sculpture

Custom sculpture for public spaces and businesses

I'm Jason Smith, a public art sculptor based in Hillsborough, North Carolina, with 38 years working with metal. I design and build custom made, large scale metal sculpture for towns, arts commissions, developers and businesses. Each piece is made for its site, and I install it myself. My sculptures are in 29 states and 5 countries, and The Sound of Tranquility won the 2025 Uproar Purchase Award.

How a commission works

  1. Inquiry or RFQ. Send me your call for artists, RFQ or a note about your site, with photos if you have them.

  2. Site visit. For public projects, I visit the site in person. I look at the site, the scale, the sight lines and how people will move around the piece.

  3. Design proposal and rendering. I make a rendering of the sculpture in your own site so your team can judge the scale and forms before anything is built.

  4. Build. I build the piece in my studio in Hillsborough, NC.

  5. Delivery and install. I crate and ship the sculpture and install it on site personally. My sculptures can sit on pavers from any home improvement store. For commercial installs, I usually use a concrete base with anchor bolts instead.

Most commissions take about 90 days. Read more about custom made metal sculpture commissions.

Built for outdoors

Every outdoor site is different, so the material depends on the site and on what the client wants. I work in stainless steel, weathering Corten steel and sealed mild steel. Stainless steel resists rust and keeps its shine. Corten weathers to a stable, warm rust-brown surface. My mild steel pieces are sealed, so they hold up great outdoors, and patinas on mild steel can add color, like the blue and turquoise on With Love. I'll help you choose the right one for your project.

Working with committees and arts councils

I'm glad to work with arts councils, public art committees and selection panels. I respond to RFQs and calls for artists, prepare design proposals and renderings, and can present to your committee in person. References are available on request, and my resume is on my resume page.

Questions

How do I commission a public art sculpture?

Send me your RFQ, call for artists or a note about your site, with photos if you have them. I visit the site, make a design proposal and a rendering of the piece in your space, and once it's approved, I build and install it. You can reach me through my contact page.

Do you respond to public art RFQs and calls for artists?

Yes. I welcome public art commissions from towns, cities, arts councils and public art programs. I can prepare a design proposal and rendering and present to your committee, and references are available on request. For public projects, I also do a site visit before I design. My work is in 29 states and 5 countries, and The Sound of Tranquility won the 2025 Uproar Purchase Award.

Do you make outdoor sculptures for businesses and commercial properties?

Yes. I make custom made sculptures for businesses, offices, campuses and other commercial sites. Electrified Bike, a 10 ft mild steel piece, was made for Electrified E-Bikes in St. Petersburg, Florida. My sculptures can sit on pavers from any home improvement store, and for commercial installs I usually use a concrete base with anchor bolts.

How long does a large sculpture commission take?

Most commissions take about 90 days. The timeline varies with the size and complexity of the piece, and I'll give you a realistic timeline once I know about your project.

Do you handle delivery and installation?

Yes. I build a custom wooden crate for each piece, ship it by freight anywhere in the US and install it on site personally. My sculptures can sit on pavers from any home improvement store. For commercial installs, I usually use a concrete base with anchor bolts instead.
